The first Christmas arrived—the joy of it came even before the costume did.

I placed the suit carefully where I could see it.

I had never been someone else before. It seemed that becoming Santa was not about looking perfect or feeling cheerful all the time. It was about choosing to carry a little warmth, even when you don’t fully feel like yourself.

And that was one small step in becoming Santa.
